Staying warm outside isn't about one thick jacket — it's about layers you can add and remove as conditions and effort change.

Base layer: manage moisture

Sits against your skin and moves sweat away. Merino wool and synthetics work well; avoid cotton, which stays wet and chills you. Base layers

Mid layer: insulate

Traps warmth. Fleece is breathable and durable; down and synthetic puffies are warmer for their weight. Synthetic insulation handles damp better than down. Fleece and puffy jackets

Outer layer: block wind and water

A waterproof-breathable shell protects your other layers. Look for adjustable hood, cuffs, and pit zips for venting. Rain shells

Don't forget the extremities
